Mr. Theodorakis or Wagner,

One other question. Has your Opera, Lysistrata, been recorded?

If so,I would like to obtain a copy. I have recordings of your other operas.

Thanks for your attention,

Trip to Greece

Mr. Theodorakis,

I am a physician from San Marcos, Texas. My friend (Anastasia Aggelaki, originally from Lamia) and I will be traveling in Greece next week (April 29 to May 11, 2008). We will be in Athens some of this time. Anastasia's brother is a physics professor at one of the Universities in Athens.

Several years ago, Anastasia introduced me to your music and your political quest world peace and understanding. We very much appreciate what you have accomplished in your illustrious life.

As a tribute to you, I have been instrumental in having my local classical music station (KMFA-FM) in Austin, Texas, present some of your music. Dr. Dan Welcher (Composer at the Univ. of Texas) played Canto General almost in its entirety on two hour long programs in October 2007 and Axion Este on another program in December.

Brian Satterwhite (a local film score composer) played some of your film music on his hour long program in November 2007.

I have contacted the local opera company to request that they present one of your operas in the future.

Are there any concerts or other events that you have planned during the period of time we will be in Greece?
We would be very appreciative if we could attend one of them or meet you to express our gratitude personally.

If this is not possible, we still are greatful for the opportunity to visit Greece and pay our respects.

With utmost repect for what you have done,

Charles Anderson, MD

Weitere Informationen: http://www.mittelsachsen.de.

Looking for the sheet music to Theodorakis Chamber works
Anatolia Ioannides 18.01.2008 05:38

I am desperately looking for the printed music of Theodorakis' Sonatina no1, and Sonatina no2 for violin and piano as well as the Piano trio. It looks like Schott has not published these particular works yet. I am preparing for upcoming performances in April and May in California. Can anybody help me. It is quite urgent and very important.
Thank you,

Hello,

In Schott edition 65 of sheetmusic written by Mikis you can find the notes of the Trio for violin, violincello and piano. (Romanos' serial publication number 65)
I belief the Schott-website needs an update.

I don't also see any sheet music with the notes for the violin sonates you asked for. It is possible that they are under publication.

May be in websites with used books you can find them as an edition from historic DDR-times.

I found so the version for piano and voice of Axion Esti, also edited in the former DDR by VEB Deutscher Verlag für Musik, Leipzig. Now this is Schott Musikverlag.

Greetings

I have written before but did not receive an answer. What a shame that Greek doesn't work on this site. It seems an insult to write in anything other than Greek. I would like to share two of K. Theodorakis' pieces of music with others, through my website, but cannot find where to obtain permission. Full credit will be given for the music. I would particularly like to be able to play,'Zorbas' and especially 'Ena To Helidoni'. What a composer! The best! Thank you for adding so much to so many lives, so much hope. Olga from Crete

You are like a father for all greeks
Magdalini Tounta 01.12.2007 00:16

Ten years ago I decided to abandon our beloved country, because every day, I realised, how hard is to be real, to have other interests than money, a nice car, a rich husband and a good position (because of MESON) in a bank. I come from a very poor family, and always wanted to study music. It was and it is a passion for me, that many people from my environment could not even realise. They still think that music is only for dreamers, or for the gypsies perhaps, but in a small greek village, it is rather strange. Music, what for?Motzart, who is he? Are you crasy? Another problem very very serious is that unfortunatelly, studying and musik learning in greece, are still, very very expensive...For me, its a reality that I must accept. I will never had enough money to pay for my dreams, for example even to learn playing well or to buy a piano that still appears in my dreams. But I am here in switzerland now because I think for me it is perhaps too late to realise my dreams 100 per cent(for ex. I learned how to play the piano for 2 years, but I can not still buy a piano and go on with learning. I have only a small synthesiser). Money is unfortunately always a practical problem. Anyway, the point is that I do not want that my children grow up, with these ideals like money and expensive handys like in my country. I do not want that my children feel like xenos in their own country, when they do not have enough and great MESON. I am either rich or famous, I am not a lawyer a doctor or a tv star, I have no BIG connections and I do not want to say;please help me or help my children to find a job;to nobody. I disagree with the whole system in my country. So I want to give my children another chance, another opportunity, that I never had. Here I can give my family, the most important thing in the world, that is for me the education without paying a fortune. Here I am me, not the daughter of my father, not the daughter of my mother. My children are also seen like individuals. Never asks me or my children...to whom belongs you? Whats the profession of your parents, who sent you to us for this job etc. But the truth is that here I am like in self-exil,because although I love I love our country, it has hurt me so much, that I want to protect my children. I do not want that my children have such problems like me before. Because I am no rich,I can not pay frontistirio for them like other people and I can not pray for them to pass the panellinies exams, I dont have a nice car, a mobile phone at all, a house with credit either. I think that I have decided for the best future of my family, and I am trying to forget my wounds seeing my children enjoying the benefits of this country.
Finding your music
Paula Boutis 05.11.2007 00:37
Dear Mr Theodorakis,

Apparently, you are a cousin of my maternal grandfather, Andonis Barbetakis (deceased before I was born, so more than 36 years ago). He apparently changed his last name from Theodorakis to Barbetakis, and moved to Mesologgi from Crete. At least, so my mother and cousins tell me! I understand a branch of the Theodorakis family is near Mesologgi, but I have never met them.

I sing first soprano and recently my vocal teacher asked me if I'd like to learn some Greek music. I admit to having little education in Greek music. Any suggestions from your repertoire for a first soprano? Where would I get a copy of your music? I live in Toronto. I haven't done any searching locally yet.

Best regards,
Paula

Respect for His Honor Mr. Theodorsakis

Being an Atheist while a humanist,I don't agree 100 % with his honor Mr. Theodorakia,M.As I'm scientific thinker,However,I admire Mr. Theodorakis humanitarian contributions, and his brave standing against inhumanities, and against the current idiotic and unjustified war in Iraq, that cost many lives, not to mention Billions of US $ Dollars, that should by right be spent on the US Americans who live in the streets of the USA as homeless,This inhuman Republican government of the USA don't care about them, and our currennt corrupt asnd criminal US President and his 'cronies',is as close to being a fascist dictator as any other. This president Bush is a global criminal, and corrupt like his damned Republican party, they're all bunch of liers and hypocrites, and war mongers, like most US Americans, but soon the P.R. of China'll replace this USA decaying criminals,as leaders of a more peacefull world, the Russian Federation, and White Russia as well 'll support them!.Currently the few really intelligent people in the world unfortunately are in minority, but I'm sure they'll soon marshall enough powers over the idiotic majority who has no idea what they vote for?,and abused the concept of democracy, many thousands of US greedy and foolish mercenaries ('Patriots' volunteered for money)died in Iraq, the rest returned to the USA and are lost for ever, too many has war triggered Post Traumatic Stress syndrom, and other mental illnesses,as well as physical loss of arm and limbs, not to even mention the dead and the suffering on the Iraqi side, which by all accounts are already then what Saddam Hussein done!,The current US government pretend to be humane, and supposedly they care about Iraq, however US Mercenaries that murdered and raped Iraqis got away with light sentences,so there's no justice in the USA,and it's very hypocritical for the USA to demand human rights from the People Republics China & Russia etc.,while here in the USA We have no true justice,or humanity.Crime here in the USA is in all times high ,Too many people are homeless, the current US A governmrent do as little as possible for the homeless, worse,It's systematically refuse to help the disabled, and some or too mnany of the USA's citizens who're trully disabled and need help to survive, while they applying for help the U.S.A.s State and especially Federal Social services deny their human rights to get help, and give them a 'run around' that last typically between 6 months to 7 years ,with a false claim, that most of such applicants are pretending to be in need,Actually in case of at least 2 folks that I know, they born in the USA and both have suffered Bipolar disorder Manic depressive condition, the poroof is available by doing MRUI &CAT scan of the brain,so why denying threnm even honest diagnoses?!,The USA government need the money for war in Iraq!,meanwhile they lost not only credability, but also 'their man' from Tora Bora!(Osama Bin Laden).

Now any intelligent and logical human being in this world, may ask:'Why the current Republican USA Government refuse to use logic,(which they don't have, and ) and get the hell outa Iraq, and use the money and resources to help innocent US Americans who really need help!,let all the finest people in this world pressure the hypocriticaL USA government to help all the needy and disabled US Americans born here or elsewhere, citizens and legal residents, and even some good illegal immigrants who 've serious medical needs as well as shelter, there should not be one person in all the USA live in the street or other places, people in the USA should be fed well, and get meduical attention, currently many USA's doctors refuse to treat the millions of uninsured, and these that have medical insurance like Medical, this is inhuman, and crime against humanity, also the corrupt laws of the USA allow landlord to evict renters for no reason at all,and they do so due to their greedy nature, they want to raise the rent too much then they evict tennants or renters legally ,legally they could throw anyone out with no reason!,So where's justice,or humanity in the USA?.

The music—and the fire
tony bird 05.10.2007 16:26
Forgive me for weighing in with a rather lengthy item, but I hope there might be some interest among Europeans in what I have to say.

I recently revived my interest in Mikis’s music, which began in the 1960s, when I was a folk musician and would often please the audience with items from the “Zorba” soundtrack on my mandolin. Someday, when I have the extra money, perhaps in my next life, I will purchase that wonderful instrument, the bouzouki.

Anyway, I happened to buy the “Troubadour” album and got a closer look at Mikis’s wonderful career, which it will not surprise you to learn has not been paid much attention to in the U.S. One song jumped out at me—“Sto Perigiali”, and I don’t mind telling you it simply brought tears to my eyes before I even understood its profound history.

So I’ve spent the past two weeks reviving my knowledge of Greek (I had a semester of classical Greek in college), translating and learning songs from that album (my wife is humming the tune for “Sto Perigiali” every morning in the shower--I’m also drawn, perhaps darkly, to that dark song “Vradiazi” about “it’s getting dark”—I would appreciate a note about its history, if anyone can tell me), checking Internet items, learning about Maria Farantouri’s also remarkable career (I guess it isn’t a coincidence that I’ve been a longtime fan of Joan Baez, “our” Maria Farantouri, especially Joan’s extraordinarily lyrical songwriting of the 1970s) …

… and finally getting around to Mikis’s web page—and a very big “uh-oh”.

Fires in Greece. I’m afraid I know what’s going on.

Since 2004, I’ve been involved in America’s 9/11 truth movement. I suspect many of the Europeans who read this will know of this very dark but increasingly open secret, although I know it’s officially denied in most of Europe, as it is here. We’re beginning to understand who the people are who are in power, and how they operate in their miserably sneaky ways, and the elaborate hoaxes they promulgate to the public. Your fires seem very much a version of the “October surprise” of American electioneering. Don’t be surprised if the investigations stall out and no one is brought to justice. Italy went through the same with the Red Brigade terrors of the 1970s. Behind everything is the power at the top—an international and currently unchallengeable power. But we’re getting an education about it, no? To me, that’s the beginning.

Mikis hits the nail on the head. Once you get a look at these people, their motivations, their amorality, and the basic dimness of their understanding—they are “totally ludicrous”. I hope some day we can be laughing at them. But they’ve been in power a long time, and their knuckles are white, gripping the levers. Their fires are set out of fear of a more essential fire—which you can find in things like Mikis’s music.

Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

as a great admirer of your personality and your entire work, being a humble composer myself - of ballads in the Dalmatian 'klapa' style (for vocal polyphony groups or soloist) - and working with several fine Croatian singers and ensembles, it occured to me to make Croatian versions of your songs 'Kaimos', 'Crissophrasino filo' and 'Sto perigali'. I've done the lyrics, following the original ones - with exception of 'Crissophrasino filo', as I coldn't find any at the Internet - and a friend of mine, Mr. Robert Grubisic, an excellent musician and producer, living in the port city of Rijeka, is about to prepare fine arrangements... and an also outstanding young singer, Miss Leonora Surian (daughter of the world famous basso Giorgio Surian) would like to sing the lead, accompanied by two vocal groups, female Ventula of Split, and male Kastav of Rijeka... providing we get your permission and settle the issue over your author's rights, i.e. the price od compensation.
Looking forward to hear from your agent, with best regards!

Dialogue with Theodorakis and Farantouri
Elaine Angelopoulos 03.09.2007 03:27
This feels a little awkward writing into a site for an endless amount of readers to see. I can't say that I know Theodorakis inside out, but I know his music in my soul very well. I grew up with his music in the 70's, because my family had his records; I was so moved by the impact and the insistence and the range of emotion coming from the singers. Unfortunately I don't remember every singers name so well, Maria Farantouri being one that I can just stuck to me, I believe because I related to her voice. I learned what was happening politically, but didn't really understand it until I was in my early adulthood. The music and then learning about the time thereafter, informed my work as an artist and participation with various causes throughout my career. It also shaped my ability to take charge of my identity as a Greek American, despite what was expected of me to be and as to what defines someone to "fit in" to the culture at large. I attended the concert at the Lincoln Center when Theodorakis and his original singers performed in 2000. I brought flowers, because for me it was like visiting the oracle. When I saw my offering shared on stage, I was so moved beyond belief. I wish I had the chance to meet Theodorakis then; I think that I would have been speechless. But now at this point, If I could propose working with him in some way, aesthetically, or having a formal dialogue of sorts about art and life, this would be incredible. I am also interested in learning more about the work he has done to really creating more solid ties between the people (and perhaps the constituencies?) of/from Greece and Turkey. Meanwhile, I will continue to be with the music, and with the knowledge that is available to me.

Dutch performance of Mauthausen works
Richard van de Stadt 03.08.2007 03:25
Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

In November 2005 and February 2006, the "Twents Mandoline en Gitaar Orkest" (Twents Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra in English), performed your Mauthausen works, conducted by Mr. Leo van Rutte.

My wife Rozalien had the honour to be asked to be the guest singer of a new dutch translation, created by Mr. Marcel Cuypers. Recordings were taken by a couple of persons, and we were informed that you would be provided with a copy. However, it was considered that the quality
of their recordings was not good enough.

During the performance on 20 November 2005, I made a recording myself, which I made public a couple of months ago via my wife's website
(www.rozalien.com), and via youtube.com

Should you be interested in the recording, please have a look at the following:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=TIVif-CSmws (Part one)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1JOOzNxJk9Q (Part two)

If you care, I would be happy to send you a higher quality recording on DVD.

Regards,

Richard van de Stadt

I am a little disappointed that you do not have a "contact us" button. I am curious as to what Mr. Theodorakis said that upset the Jewish community so, and what his side of the story is.

Dear Dean Pappas,
The contact button would make things just more complicated. But why don't you send him an e-mail by clicking on the link MAIL to Theodorakis?

Wish
Eustace Frilingos 21.07.2007 23:43
Dear webmaster. I would like to express my wish that the lyrics at least of the more complex works of Mr. Theodorakis (Axion Esti, Canto General etc.) be available for download. You see, the size of the CDs does not allow the font to be big enough, and unfortunately not everybody has good enough eyesight. I understand that there may be legal obstacles, but obstacles are to be overcome. For many of those of us who live away from Greece, the music of Mr. Theodorakis is a major link to the motherland, for which we are grateful.

Dear Eustace Frilingos,
I know that it would be important to have the texts of the great metasymphonic works and oratorios of Mikis Theodorakis on the homepage. But: In what language? With what translations? And, honestly, who gives us the rights? We have also to respect the authors and their editors. Don't you agree?

Kind Request
Panagiotis Papoulias 14.06.2007 19:20

Mr Theodorakis,
It would be a great offence towards the people that love you if you do not live at least until 2070 to see all the greats that will happen.

Loving music that will never be outdated or old
Laura Anna Larkin 14.05.2007 22:49

I have know Mr. Theodorakis music since the late 70is. I especially love one particular LP, which his office is now trying to help me locate and I don't recall the title, nor do I know if it was ever copied onto CD.

If not, I'll still have his music in my heart.. .

Good blessed you with a wonderful gift, Mr. Theodorakis. Being able to write the kind of music that you have and making so many people around the world happy when listening is extraordinary.

I wish that you'd have many more years to enjoy.

Laura

Kalimera Kirie Theodorakis
Your music still inspires me especially the new album "Odysssia" that has just been released with the divine voice of Maria Farantouri. I am still collecting all her albums slowly but surely. You have visited many countries in your years but I have not known if you have ever visited Johannesburg South Africa. I think it will a good revival to the Greek nation in this country.

Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

I am a classical guitarist who recently released a CD for classical guitar solo. The CD includes works by various composers and some of your own that I arranged for guitar. Please tell me how I could send you a copy of the CD and get some comments from you. I hope you remember me from the previous CD for voice and guitar.

Sincerely yours,

from Yalta-Film studio
Julia Shovkoshitna 11.04.2007 09:33

Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

I'm writing to you on the behalf of Yalta-Film studio, Ukraine. This year we've shot a feature movie named "Sappho". This is a tragedy which takes place in Greek island by the end of 1920s.
We are big fans of your classical music, and would be honoured to use it in our movie and consider it the best possible variant.
Please, inform us whom we should contact as regards this question.

We are really hoping for your interest and assistance.

best wishes,
Julia
